Come visit us in Sweden. We have potato chips with dill, boiled potatoes with dill, crayfish with dill, something simply called "dillmeat", and of course aquavit flavoured with dill.

Good piece but I think you're a little too generous to the Ukrainians...despite the exceptions you mention, in my experience most of them are still pretty spice-o-phobic. BTW, another regional exception is Zakarpattia, because of the Hungarian influence. I have a buddy from Mukachevo and his parents pickle vegetables like everybody else - but unlike everybody else, theirs have a good bit of heat.

Also, you may be interested to know there's an English translation of One-Storied America, the English title is Ilf and Petrov's American Road Trip.

I have a post about the pickling culture coming up. My Odesa Oblast grandma made her tomatoes extremely spicy. But the Russian-influenced part of Ukraine is definitely pretty aromaphobic.
